Dry cuticles come down to two things. The thin skin around your nail loses water faster than it replaces it, and there is usually nothing sitting on top to slow that down. Beef tallow helps with the second part. It is an occlusive fat with a fatty acid profile close to what your own skin makes, so it stays put overnight instead of soaking away in ten minutes.
If yours are peeling by Wednesday and you have already been through three bottles of hand lotion, start with Unscented Whipped Tallow. Fragrance free, two ingredients, and thick enough that it is still there when you wake up.
Why do cuticles get so dry in the first place?
The skin around your nails is thinner than the skin on the back of your hand, and it takes far more abuse. Hand washing. Sanitizer. Dish soap. Cold air. Nitrile gloves. Each one pulls lipids off the surface, and once those lipids are gone, water evaporates straight out through the gap.
Jeremie is a good example of this. Between station soap at the firehouse and scrubbing up after a batch day here in Loomis, the corners of his nails split every winter, and no amount of drinking water changes it. That is the part people get wrong. Dry cuticles are a surface problem, so they need a surface answer.
The American Academy of Dermatology's nail care basics are unglamorous and correct: keep the skin around the nail moisturized, and leave your hangnails alone. The American Academy of Dermatology says roughly the same thing, noting that ointments and creams add more moisture to skin and are more effective than lotions.
Does beef tallow actually work on cuticles?
It does the job an ointment is supposed to do, and it does it without a long ingredient list. Grass-fed tallow is mostly oleic, palmitic, and stearic acid, which is close to the mix your skin already produces. That is why it spreads thin and absorbs rather than sitting on top like a wax.
It also carries vitamins A, D, E, and K naturally, along with CLA and small amounts of omega-3s, because they occur in the fat of cattle raised on grass. We are not adding them. They come with the raw material, which is part of why we source from grass-fed, grass-finished cattle on 150+ acres of regenerative land.
To be plain about what this is: tallow balm is a cosmetic. It supports the look and feel of healthy, comfortable skin. It is not a treatment for anything.
How do I use tallow on my cuticles at night?
This takes about fifteen seconds and it works best when you stop skipping nights.
- Wash and dry your hands, but leave them slightly damp. Damp skin gives the balm something to seal in.
- Scoop a piece about the size of a grain of rice. That is genuinely enough for both hands.
- Warm it between your fingertips for a second so it melts.
- Press it into the base of each nail and work it around the sides, then rub whatever is left over your knuckles.
- Do it right before bed, not before you go do dishes.
A week or two of consistent nights is usually what it takes before the corners stop splitting. If you want the longer version of the technique, our beginner's guide to using tallow balm covers amounts and layering in more detail.

Which Pure Lifestyle product is best for cuticles?
Unscented is the one we reach for. It is our only true two-ingredient formula, just grass-fed tallow and organic coconut oil, so there is no essential oil anywhere near skin that is already cracked open at the corners.
If you want something you can keep in a pocket for the middle of the day, Lip Relief in Unscented is a tube of the same idea with jojoba and local mountain beeswax added. It was built for lips, but it works fine pressed into a nail corner at a stoplight. Note that it contains beeswax, so it is not vegan.
And if you would rather have a scent, Lemon + Lavender uses the same tallow base with organic lemon and lavender essential oils. You can see everything side by side in the full Pure Lifestyle collection.
What if tallow doesn't work for me?
Then it does not work for you, and that is worth saying out loud. Tallow is not for everyone. People with oily or acne-prone skin often do not love it on the face, though hands and cuticles are rarely a problem. Some people simply do not like a fat-based balm, and a few notice a faint smell in the jar even in the unscented one.
There is also a limit to what any balm can address. If your nails are thickening, changing color, or lifting from the bed, that is not a dryness question and a balm is the wrong tool. See your doctor.
If your hands and feet are dry too, the same routine carries over. We wrote up tallow for dry, cracked hands and tallow balm for cracked heels, and it is the same fifteen seconds before bed.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I put tallow on my cuticles?
Once a night is plenty for most people. If your hands are in and out of water all day, add a second pass after your last wash.
Will beef tallow leave my hands greasy?
Only if you use too much. Whipped tallow is aerated, so a rice-grain amount covers both hands and absorbs in a couple of minutes. If your hands feel slick after five minutes, cut the amount in half.
Does tallow balm smell like beef?
Properly rendered grass-fed tallow does not. Our unscented jar has a faint, clean, slightly nutty smell that fades within a minute or two on skin.
Is tallow better than cuticle oil?
They do different jobs. A thin oil absorbs quickly and disappears. A balm sits on the surface longer, which is what you want overnight. Plenty of people use both.
