Can You Wear Tallow Balm Under Makeup?

It is one of the most common questions we get from people who have just started using tallow on their face, and it usually arrives with a note of frustration attached. The balm feels wonderful on bare skin. Then foundation goes on top and the whole thing rolls into little beads along the cheekbones.

The honest answer is yes, you can wear whipped tallow under makeup, and most of the people who say it does not work are using far too much of it and not giving it long enough. If you want the simplest place to start, our Unscented Whipped Tallow is the one we point people to for this, because it is fragrance-free and you can see exactly what it does without a scent in the way.

The short answer

A pea-sized amount, warmed between your fingers, pressed into damp skin, then five to ten minutes before you touch a brush. That is the whole method. Almost every complaint about pilling comes down to skipping one of those four things.

What does not work is treating a balm like a primer and putting on the amount you would use on your hands. Whipped tallow is a rich, water-free product. It is designed to sit on the surface and stay there, which is exactly what you want overnight and exactly what causes trouble if you pile it on and then drag a foundation brush through it thirty seconds later.

Why balm pills under foundation

Pilling is friction, not chemistry. When a layer of product has not settled into the skin and you rub something else across it, the two layers roll up together into those small crumbs. It happens with silicone primers, it happens with heavy serums, and it happens with balm.

Three things change it:

  • Less product. On a face, a pea is genuinely enough. If your skin looks shiny rather than soft after a minute, you have used more than you need.
  • Warm it first. Rub it between your fingertips until it turns from a solid whip into an oil. It goes on in a much thinner, more even film that way.
  • Press, do not rub. Pat it in with flat fingers rather than massaging it around. Less mechanical disturbance, less to roll up later.

Damp skin helps too. Dermatologists recommend applying moisturizer while your skin is still damp after washing, and the same advice holds here: a thin film of balm over slightly damp skin spreads further and absorbs faster than the same amount on bone-dry skin.

A little really does go a long way. If you have been avoiding balm under makeup because the last one you tried felt heavy, the amount is almost always the variable worth changing first.

"Oh my goodness, there's so much to love about this product. I love the scent and a little goes a very long way. Even though I'm using this daily, I think this jar will last a long time!"

Angi, on Lemon + Lavender Whipped Tallow, 5 stars. That is the scented jar, not the unscented one linked above. Her point about how far a little goes is the one that matters here.

The method, step by step

  1. Cleanse and leave your face slightly damp. Pat with a towel, do not dry it off completely.
  2. Take a pea-sized amount and warm it between your fingertips for about ten seconds, until it turns glossy.
  3. Press it over your face in thin layers. Cheeks and jaw first, since those are usually the driest, then a light pass over the forehead and nose.
  4. Wait. Five minutes is the minimum, ten is better. Brush your teeth, do your hair, make coffee.
  5. Check with the back of a finger. If your skin feels soft and matte-ish rather than slippery, it is ready. If it still feels wet, blot once with a tissue and give it two more minutes.
  6. Apply makeup by pressing or stippling rather than sweeping, especially for the first layer.

One more thing worth saying: if you use a mattifying or silicone-heavy primer, you may not need it on top of balm at all. Two occlusive layers stacked on each other is usually one too many.

If your skin is oilier, or you want something lighter

Whipped tallow is rich by design, and that suits normal to dry skin under makeup very well. If your skin runs oily, or you simply want a lighter feel in the morning, a face oil layers thinner than a balm does.

That is what our Pure Glow Face Serum is for. It is eight organic plant oils, including argan, rosehip, jojoba and sea buckthorn, with no tallow in it and no essential oils. Two or three drops pressed into damp skin absorb faster than a balm and leave less on the surface for a brush to catch. Plenty of people we hear from do exactly this: serum in the morning under makeup, balm at night.

It is not an either-or. It is a question of how much you want sitting on your face while you are also wearing foundation.

Common questions

Will it break me out? Skin is individual and we would not promise anyone it will not. What we would say is that the amount matters more than the ingredient. If you are going to test whipped tallow under makeup, do it with a small amount for a week before you decide.

Can I use it as a highlighter on the cheekbones? Yes, and it is one of our favorite uses. A tiny amount patted over the top of foundation gives a real skin-like sheen. Use less than you think, and go over powder rather than under it.

Does the scented version work the same? The base is identical. The scented jars add essential oils, so if you are wearing perfume as well you may prefer the unscented one under makeup simply to keep things quiet.

What about setting spray? No conflict. Let the balm absorb, apply makeup, set as normal.

How long before I know if it suits me? A week of mornings is usually enough to tell whether your foundation sits well on it. If it is still pilling after a week of using half as much as you started with, it is probably not the product for your skin under makeup, and the serum is the lighter option.

What the balm is actually doing under there

Dermatology references group moisturizer ingredients into humectants, emollients and occlusives, and describe occlusives as forming a physical barrier over the skin that slows water evaporation, while emollients smooth and soften by filling the gaps between skin cells. A water-free whipped balm works in those last two ways. It is not putting water into your skin, it is helping your skin keep hold of the water it already has, and softening the surface so makeup has something even to sit on.

That is also why timing matters so much. The film needs a few minutes to settle before anything else goes on top of it. Nothing exotic is happening. It is just a fat sitting on skin, and fats need a moment.

Our balms are cosmetics. They support the look and feel of comfortable, well-moisturized skin, and that is the whole claim.

We are Jeremie and Megan. We make every batch by hand in Loomis, California, from grass fed tallow, and our name is on every jar. If it arrives and it is not right for you, write to us and we will sort it out.

Every batch is made in small runs by hand, and the unscented jar is the one we keep stocked year round. The seasonal scents come and go with the season, so check the collection page for what is actually available rather than trusting a date in an article.
