Most people get two to four months out of one jar of whipped tallow using it on their face every day. Spread it head to toe, or hand it around to the whole family, and six to eight weeks is closer to the truth. It depends on how much skin you're covering and how heavy-handed you are. Almost everyone starts out heavy-handed.
That math matters, because a jar of Unscented Whipped Tallow is $35, and $35 sounds like a lot for a moisturizer right up until you divide it by the number of days you'll actually be reaching for it.
Why you need less tallow than you think
Whipped tallow is not lotion. Lotion is mostly water, so you pump out a palmful and it disappears into your skin in seconds. Tallow is the opposite. It's dense, it's whipped with air, and it keeps working after it's absorbed.
For your face, a pea-sized amount is plenty. Warm it between your fingertips for a few seconds first so it turns from a soft solid into an oil, then press it in. If your skin looks shiny ten minutes later, you used too much. That's the single biggest reason a first jar disappears faster than a second one. People figure out the dose.
Thick is the point. Thick is also why a little goes a long way.
What changes how fast you go through a jar
Four things, mostly:
How much surface area you're covering. Face only is slow. Face, hands, elbows, feet, and a toddler after bath time is fast.
How many people are using it. One jar on a shared bathroom counter in a house of four is not going to behave like a jar that lives in one person's nightstand drawer.
The season. Winter air and hot showers pull moisture out of skin, so most people reapply more from November through March. The American Academy of Dermatology notes the same seasonal pattern in its dry-skin guidance.
Whether you apply to damp skin. This one's free. Put tallow on right after a shower while your skin is still a little damp and you'll need noticeably less of it. Dry skin drinks more.
“Oh my goodness, there's so much to love about this product. I love the scent and a little goes a very long way. Even though I'm using this daily, I think this jar will last a long time!”

What does a jar cost per day?
Take the $35 jar and stretch it across three months of daily face use. That's a little under 40 cents a day. Burn through it in six weeks because four people are using it on everything, and you're at roughly 80 cents a day for the whole household.
Compare that to a shelf of separate products. A face cream, a hand cream, a body lotion, and a foot balm add up quickly, and most of what you're paying for in each one is water and the packaging that holds it. One jar of tallow replaces the lot for a lot of people. That's the real value argument, and it's not a small one.
Being straight with you: tallow isn't for everyone. If your skin is oily and acne-prone, a rich balm may not be what it wants, and no amount of good cost-per-day math fixes that. Our Pure Glow Face Serum is the lighter option if that's you.
How to make a jar last longer
None of these are complicated.
Start with less than you think you need. You can always add a second pass. Warm it first, because cold tallow doesn't spread and you'll scoop more to compensate. Apply to damp skin. Use clean, dry fingers so you're not introducing water into the jar. And keep it somewhere cool and out of direct sun, since heat softens the whip and makes it easy to overscoop.
If you're brand new to this, our beginner's guide to using tallow balm covers dosing in more detail, and how to layer tallow in your routine explains where it fits with everything else you're already using.
Does the scent you pick change how long it lasts?
Not really. All of our whipped tallow is built on the same grass-fed base, so a jar of Lemon + Lavender goes about as far as an unscented one. What does change is where you'll use it. We tend to use the scented jars on body and hands, and the unscented one on faces. That habit affects the jar more than the formula does.
Lips are their own thing. A tube of Lip Relief is $12 and lasts a long while, which is why a lot of people keep one in the car and one in a bag.
A note from Loomis
Jeremie and Megan whip every batch by hand here in Loomis, California, in small runs. That's part of why we'd rather you use less and have it last than go through jars quickly. A jar that sits on your counter for three months and does its job is a better outcome for you than one that empties in three weeks.
For most of you, one jar is enough for a season. Start there, see how far it goes, and buy the second one when you actually need it.

Common questions
How much tallow balm should I use on my face?
A pea-sized amount, warmed between your fingertips and pressed in. If you're shiny after ten minutes, cut the amount in half next time.
Can one jar cover my whole family?
Yes, and it is a common way to use it. Expect it to last roughly six to eight weeks rather than three months at that pace.
How should I store it so it doesn't go soft?
Somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight. A bathroom counter is fine in most homes. A sunny windowsill or a hot car is not. Warm tallow still works, it's just harder to portion.
Is a $35 jar actually worth it?
That depends on whether it replaces other products for you. If one jar takes the place of a face cream, a hand cream, and a body lotion, the per-day cost is low. If you'd only ever use it on your face, it's still a few months of use.
