How to Choose a Natural Moisturizer for Sensitive Skin

How to Choose a Natural Moisturizer for Sensitive Skin

If your skin stings or flushes after a moisturizer, the shortest ingredient list you can find is usually the best place to start. Not because short lists are magic, but because every additional ingredient is one more thing that might be the problem, and a short list makes it far easier to work out what is.

That is the whole method. Here is how to apply it when you are standing in front of a shelf reading labels.

Read the list, not the front of the bottle

"Gentle" and "for sensitive skin" are marketing words with no agreed definition behind them. The ingredient list is the part that has to be accurate. A useful habit: read it out loud. If you cannot say what most of it is doing there, that is worth noticing.

The ingredients most often flagged as contact irritants in reactive skin are fragrance, denatured alcohol, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, propylene glycol and artificial dyes. None of that makes a product bad for everybody. It does mean a label carrying several of them gives you more variables than you want when you are trying to find out what your own skin tolerates.

Why a simple balm is easy to test

Unscented Whipped Tallow is two ingredients: grass-fed tallow and organic coconut oil. No water, so no preservative is needed. No fragrance, no dyes, no fillers. Our tallow comes from grass-fed, grass-finished cattle raised on 150-plus acres of regeneratively farmed land, with no herbicides, pesticides or vaccines, and we render it in small batches ourselves.

Tallow's fatty acids, mostly oleic, palmitic and stearic, are among the same ones found in the skin's own surface lipids, which is part of why a thin layer tends to absorb rather than sit on top. It supports the look and feel of comfortable, well-moisturized skin. Beyond that we are not going to make promises, and that restraint is the point: with two ingredients, if it does not suit you, you know exactly what you are reacting to.

Start with the plain jar

For reactive skin, Unscented Whipped Tallow is the one we would hand you. Two ingredients, no fragrance, and the shortest list we make.

How to patch test properly

  1. Pick one spot you can keep an eye on. The inner forearm or just in front of the ear.
  2. Apply a small amount once a day for four days running.
  3. Change nothing else in your routine for those four days. One variable at a time, or the test tells you nothing.
  4. If the spot stays quiet, widen out slowly. If it does not, stop and you have your answer cheaply.

Reactive skin changes with weather, sleep and stress, so one good or bad day tells you very little. Four days is a fairer read.

What about a scented jar?

If fragrance is the thing your skin reacts to, stay unscented. That is the honest answer, and we are not going to talk you into a scented jar.

If your skin is simply dry rather than reactive, the scented jars use the same base plus pure essential oils, never fragrance oil. Lemon + Lavender Whipped Tallow is the one we use ourselves. Essential oils are still botanical fragrance, so patch test it the same way, and there is a longer walk-through in scented or unscented tallow balm.

What we will not tell you

That it is safe for a baby. Ask your pediatrician before putting anything new on an infant. We are a small balm maker and not your child's doctor.

That it will not clog your pores. We hold no comedogenicity testing, so we will not claim it. Oily and acne-prone skin is the exception to tallow suiting people; does tallow clog pores goes into that properly.

That it does anything for a diagnosed condition. If you are managing eczema, rosacea or anything else with a name, that belongs with your own provider. A fragrance-free moisturizer is a reasonable thing to discuss with them, and we have written what we honestly can about rosacea-prone skin without crossing that line.

If you would rather start even lighter than a balm, Pure Glow Face Serum is eight organic plant oils with no tallow in it at all.

We are Jeremie and Megan

We whip every batch by hand in Loomis, California, and our name is on every jar. If one is not right for your skin, tell us and we will sort it out. The rest of the whipped tallow collection is built on the same base.
