Fall is when a lot of us notice skin getting tight, flaky, and a little cranky. As the air cools and dries out, your skin loses water faster, and a richer moisturizer like grass-fed tallow can help it hold onto what it has. If your summer routine suddenly feels like it isn't enough, you're not imagining it. Here's how tallow fits into a simple cool-weather routine, and how to switch over without overthinking it.
We're Jeremie and Megan, and we make our whipped tallow by hand in Loomis, California. Every fall our customers tell us the same thing: the light lotion that worked in July stops keeping up by October. If that's you, our Unscented Whipped Tallow is the easiest place to start. It's just two ingredients, and it plays nice with sensitive skin.

Why does skin get drier in the fall?
Two things happen at once. Outdoor humidity drops, and indoor heaters kick on. Both pull moisture out of the air, and your skin follows. In low humidity, skin loses water more easily, which is why it can feel rough and tight this time of year. The American Academy of Dermatology points to colder, drier air as a common reason skin feels dry in fall and winter (AAD).
A lightweight lotion is mostly water. It feels nice for a second, then evaporates. Tallow works differently. It's rich in the same kinds of fats your skin already makes, so it sits on the surface and helps slow that water loss instead of flashing off.
Is tallow too heavy for fall?
This is the opposite worry from summer, when people ask if tallow is too rich. In fall, rich is usually the point. A little goes a long way, so you're not slathering it on. Warm a small amount between your fingers, press it into damp skin, and let it soak in. If your skin runs oily, you can still use it. Just use less, and keep it to the areas that get dry, like cheeks, shins, and the backs of your hands.

A simple fall tallow routine
You don't need ten steps. Here's the short version that works for most people.
Morning: cleanse gently, then while your face is still a little damp, press in a thin layer of tallow. Damp skin gives the tallow something to seal in. Evening: same idea, maybe a touch more, since you're winding down for the day.
Hands take the worst of fall, especially if you're washing them constantly. Keep a jar by the sink. We wrote a whole routine for dry, cracked hands if that's your trouble spot. And don't forget lips, which chap first once the air turns. Our Unscented Lip Relief lives in a lot of coat pockets around here from October on.
"I started using your tallow cream after washing my face and the dry/flakiness is gone!"

Scented or unscented for cooler weather?
Both work the same on your skin. It comes down to what you like. If your skin is easily irritated, unscented is the safe bet, since fragrance is a common trigger. If you want a little seasonal warmth, our limited Autumn Glow Whipped Tallow leans cozy without going overboard. Want to compare your options side by side? Browse the full collection.
One honest note: tallow isn't for everyone. If your skin is very oily or acne-prone, a heavy balm may feel like too much, and that's okay. Start small, patch test, and see how your skin responds over a week.
How is this different from my summer routine?
Mostly it's about how much and how often. In summer, many people reach for a thinner layer or skip midday. In fall, you'll likely want a bit more, morning and night, and you'll notice dry spots asking for a touch-up. If you're coming off a lighter summer setup, our post on whether tallow balm is too heavy for summer skin is a useful before-and-after read.

Fall tallow questions, answered
Is tallow good for dry fall and winter skin?
Yes. As humidity drops, skin loses water faster, and a rich moisturizer like grass-fed tallow helps skin look and feel soft and comfortable. Press a thin layer into damp skin.
How often should I use tallow in the fall?
Morning and night for most people, with a touch-up on dry spots like hands, shins, and lips.
Is unscented or scented tallow better for sensitive skin?
Unscented is the safer choice for easily irritated skin, since fragrance is a common trigger.
The bottom line
As the air dries out, your skin needs help holding onto moisture, and a rich, simple moisturizer earns its place. Grass-fed tallow is about as simple as it gets. Start with a small amount on damp skin, add lips and hands to the routine, and adjust as the weather does. If you want to try it, our family makes every batch by hand in Loomis, and we'd love for it to make your fall a little more comfortable.
