Tallow vs. Mineral Oil for Dry Skin: An Honest Look

Jar of Unscented Whipped Tallow by Pure Lifestyle, a grass-fed tallow alternative to mineral oil for dry skin

Mineral oil and tallow do the same basic job on dry skin: they sit on top and slow down how fast water leaves. Mineral oil is a refined petroleum product. Tallow is rendered beef fat. The difference you actually feel comes down to what each one is made of and where it came from. Our Unscented Whipped Tallow is our answer to the question, and we will be straight with you about where mineral oil still wins.

We're Jeremie and Megan Hannon, and we make whipped tallow by hand in Loomis, California. We don't sell mineral oil, so we are not going to pretend it does nothing. It does something, and it does it cheaply. Here is the honest comparison.

What is mineral oil, and why is it in so many products?

Mineral oil is a clear, odorless oil refined from petroleum. It is inexpensive, it does not go rancid, and it is very good at one specific thing: forming a layer that slows water loss from the surface of skin. That is why it shows up in so many lotions and gentle creams, and why it has been the backbone of drugstore skincare for a century.

So it is not a villain. It is an inert layer. It sits there and it does not change. That is both its strength and its limit.

How tallow is different

Mineral oil is essentially one kind of molecule, refined until nothing else is left. Tallow is a whole fat, with the composition it had in the animal. Grass-fed and grass-finished tallow carries fat-soluble vitamins from the pasture the cattle grazed on, which is a statement about what the fat contains and not a promise about what it will do for your face. We went through that properly in grass-fed tallow and vitamins A, D, E and K2.

Does a whole fat do more for skin than a refined one? We are not going to tell you it does, because we cannot show you that, and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing in public. What we can describe is texture. Mineral oil can feel slick and slightly plasticky on the skin. Tallow melts at body temperature and settles in rather than sliding around. Which of those you prefer is a real preference, and it is yours to make.

Which one feels better, and which lasts longer?

It depends on your skin and on the time of day, and we would rather give you the trade-off than a winner.

Mineral oil is lighter on the surface and washes off easily, which suits some people on the body right after a shower. It has no scent and almost no texture, so there is nothing to get used to.

Tallow is thicker. A pea-sized scoop warms in your fingers and goes a long way, and because there is no water in it, it tends to stay put through a night's sleep. If you have ever used a thin oil in the evening and felt dry again by lunch, that is the gap a balm is trying to close. We wrote about how it actually feels in is tallow balm greasy.

For the other common petroleum option, see tallow vs. petroleum jelly. If you are weighing a water-based product instead, tallow balm vs. lotion covers that one.

Ingredients, and where they come from

Mineral oil is a single refined ingredient, so its label is short. Ours is short too. Our Unscented is two ingredients, tallow and organic coconut oil, and it is the only product we describe that way. The scented blends are the same base with third-party-tested essential oils added, never fragrance oil, so their lists are longer.

Where they come from is the real difference. Mineral oil starts underground. Our tallow comes from grass-fed, grass-finished cattle raised on 150-plus acres of regeneratively farmed land, with no herbicides, pesticides or vaccines, and we render it in small batches ourselves. If that matters to you, it is a fair reason to choose one over the other. If it does not, mineral oil will still do the basic job, and we would rather you knew the difference than guessed at it. There is more in our grass-fed vs. grain-fed guide.

Worth saying plainly: Brian is comparing us with another tallow maker, not with mineral oil. We do not have a review from someone who switched off mineral oil, so we are not going to dress one up as if we did.

Who should skip tallow?

Tallow is not for everyone, and mineral oil is not the answer to every objection to it either.

  • Oily or breakout-prone facial skin. A rich balm may not agree with you. We have not had our jars tested for comedogenicity, so we do not describe them as non-comedogenic and we are not going to put a number on it. The longer version is in does tallow clog pores.
  • Vegan households. Tallow is beef fat, so it is out. We set out the whole picture, our own shelf included, in is tallow vegan.
  • A coconut oil sensitivity. It is in every balm we make, so check with your provider first.
  • Cracked, bleeding or painful skin. That is a question for a clinician rather than for any moisturizer, ours included.

Common questions

Is mineral oil bad for your skin? Not as a rule. It is a widely used cosmetic ingredient that works as a barrier. People who choose tallow over it tend to be choosing on source and on feel, not because mineral oil has harmed them.

Will tallow feel heavier than mineral oil? Yes. It is a balm rather than a liquid oil, so it feels richer going on. The usual approach is a small amount at night, or on the driest spots only, with something lighter during the day.

Can I use both? There is nothing stopping you, though there is not much point layering two occlusives. Pick one for the job and keep the routine simple.

Does tallow clog pores? It depends on your skin, and we have not had it tested, so we are not going to give you a yes or a no. The honest discussion is in does tallow clog pores.
