The short version: whipped tallow holds moisture in because it is mostly the same kinds of fat your skin already makes. That is the whole argument. It is not a miracle and we are not going to dress it up as one, but it is a good reason a two-ingredient balm can do the job of several bottles.
Here is what is actually going on, what we will claim, and what we will not.
Why the fats matter
The outer layer of your skin is held together by lipids, which is to say fats. When that lipid matrix is depleted, water leaves the surface faster than the skin can replace it, and that is what dryness and tightness feel like.
Tallow is rich in oleic, palmitic and stearic acids, which are among the same fatty acids found in the skin's own surface lipids. That similarity is why a thin layer of whipped tallow tends to absorb and feel at home rather than sitting on top like a wax. It supports the look and feel of comfortable, well-moisturized skin. That is the claim, and we keep it there on purpose.
The vitamins that come with the fat
Grass-fed tallow naturally contains the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, plus conjugated linoleic acid and omega-3s. These occur in the fat itself and are not added afterward. Vitamin E has been valued as an antioxidant in skincare for generations. Beyond that we are not going to turn a list of vitamins into a promise about your skin, because the honest answer is that nobody has run that trial on a finished tallow balm.
Two ingredients, nothing else
Unscented Whipped Tallow is grass-fed tallow and organic coconut oil. No water, no fillers, no preservatives, no fragrance. Our tallow comes from grass-fed, grass-finished cattle raised on 150-plus acres of regeneratively farmed land, with no herbicides, pesticides or vaccines, and we render it in small batches ourselves.
One jar, several jobs
A single jar works as a face moisturizer, as a body balm on dry elbows, knees and hands, and as something to reach for on chapped lips. That versatility is most of the value.
- Unscented is the plain one, with no fragrance at all. It is what we reach for on faces and on skin that reacts to things.
- Pure Glow Face Serum is the lighter option for the face, a blend of eight organic plant oils with no tallow in it at all.
- Lemon + Lavender Whipped Tallow is the same base with pure lemon and lavender essential oils, and it is the scented jar we use ourselves.
What we will not tell you
That it will not clog your pores. We have not had our jars tested for comedogenicity, so we are not going to make that claim. Tallow's fatty acid profile is close to sebum and plenty of people with normal to dry skin get on with it. Oily and acne-prone skin is the real exception. Patch test one spot for a few days before you commit.
That it is safe for a baby. Ask your pediatrician first. We are a small balm maker and not your child's doctor, so we will not tell you a product is safe for an infant. If they say a simple fragrance-free balm is fine to try, the unscented jar is the only one of ours we would point at, and the same patch test applies.
That it treats anything. It is a cosmetic. If you are managing a diagnosed skin condition, that belongs with your healthcare provider rather than a blog post.
What you are likely to notice
The first change is usually not dramatic. Skin feels softer and less tight, and a thin layer still feels like it is doing something hours later, which is what you would expect from a balm with no water in it to evaporate. Rough texture takes longer, because that is skin turning over on its own schedule.
