Where to Find Natural Tallow Skincare Made from Grass-Fed Beef

If you are shopping for tallow skincare and trying to work out whose to trust, the useful questions are narrower than most labels suggest. Was the animal grass-finished as well as grass-fed? How short is the ingredient list? Can the maker tell you anything specific about where the fat came from, or do they just print the words? Those three get you most of the way, and you can ask them of us as easily as of anyone else.

We make this, so we have an obvious interest in your answer. The jar we would point you at is Unscented Whipped Tallow. What follows is what we would actually look for if we were buying someone else's.

Grass-fed is not the same as grass-finished

This is the single most common gap between what a label says and what a buyer assumes. Cattle can be raised on pasture for most of their lives and then moved onto grain for the last stretch, and the fat still comes from an animal that was, for a while, grass-fed. If the diet matters to you, the word to look for is finished, not just fed.

Ours are grass-fed and grass-finished. We go into why the diet changes the fat at all in grass-fed vs. grain-fed tallow, and we try to keep that page to what we can actually stand behind rather than to a nutrient table nobody can check.

Read the ingredient list, not the front of the jar

A tallow product can be two ingredients or twenty. Both are legitimate. The trouble is that the front of a jar tends to say tallow in large letters whether tallow is the whole product or a small part of a water-based lotion, and those two things behave very differently on skin.

Turn it over. If the list starts with water or aqua, you are looking at an emulsion that contains some tallow, which also means it needs a preservative system to stay safe. If the list is two or three fats and nothing else, you are looking at a balm. Neither is wrong, but you should know which you are buying.

Ours is tallow and organic coconut oil, with third-party-tested essential oils in the scented ones and nothing at all in the unscented one.

Ask whether anyone can tell you about the actual animals

Most tallow brands buy rendered fat from a supplier and have no visibility past the invoice. That is not a scandal, it is just how most supply chains work, and it is worth knowing which kind of maker you are buying from. The test is simple: ask a specific question and see whether you get a specific answer or a paragraph of adjectives.

For ours, the specific answer is this. Our tallow comes from grass-fed, grass-finished cattle raised on 150-plus acres of regeneratively farmed land, with no herbicides, pesticides or vaccines, and we render it in small batches ourselves.

We will also tell you what we are not claiming, because the gap matters. We do not hold an organic certification on the tallow, so we do not describe it that way. The coconut oil is organic, and that is the whole of what the word covers on our label. We have not had our jars tested for comedogenicity, so we do not describe them as non-comedogenic and we are not going to put a number on it. And we are not going to point at a certification we do not hold.

The plain jar, two ingredients

Unscented Whipped Tallow is grass-fed tallow whipped with organic coconut oil, with no scent, no dyes and no additives. It is the one to start with if you want to judge the fat itself rather than a fragrance.

Four more things worth checking

Does it smell of anything? An unscented tallow that smells faintly of beef has not been filtered enough. This is the most reliable tell of a rushed product, and it is the thing people give up on tallow over. We wrote about it in does tallow skincare smell like beef.

Fragrance oil or essential oil? These are different things and a label does not always make it obvious. Ours are scented only with third-party-tested essential oils, never fragrance oil. If a jar says fragrance and you are sensitive, the unscented version of anything is the easier place to start.

Who made it, and will they answer an email? A small maker who answers you is worth a lot when something arrives grainy or a scent does not suit you.

Is the texture the one you will actually use? Pure rendered tallow sets firm. Whipped tallow is soft enough to lift with a fingertip. That is a texture decision rather than a quality one, and we explained the difference in whipped tallow vs. tallow balm.

What we make

Everything in our whipped tallow line is built on the same base: grass-fed tallow and organic coconut oil. The unscented jar has nothing else in it. The scented ones add third-party-tested essential oils and nothing more.

Alongside those we make a lip balm and a face serum, and the serum is worth a specific note because it is a different product entirely: Pure Glow Face Serum is a blend of eight organic plant oils and contains no tallow at all. We mention it because people assume everything we make is tallow, and it is not.

The seasonal scents come and go with the batch, so the whipped tallow collection is the honest place to see what is actually available rather than a list in an article that ages.

Common questions

How can I tell if tallow skincare is really grass-fed? You often cannot from the jar alone, which is the uncomfortable answer. Look for the word grass-finished rather than only grass-fed, and look for a maker who will answer a direct question about the animals with something specific. Adjectives on a label are not evidence.

Is more expensive tallow better? Not reliably. Price tracks batch size and branding at least as much as it tracks the fat. A short ingredient list, a properly filtered scent-free base and a maker who will talk to you are better signals than a price tag.

Does tallow skincare need preservatives? A water-free balm does not need a preservative system the way a water-based lotion does, because there is no water for anything to grow in. That is one practical reason the ingredient list on a true balm is so short. Storage still matters, and we covered it in does tallow balm expire.
