Short answer: yes, for a lot of people, and no for some. Tallow is a heavy, water-free fat, which makes it a genuinely good match for a dry or tight face and a poor match for someone who already runs oily. Below is the honest version of what it does, what we will not claim it does, and how to find out which camp your skin is in without wasting a jar.
If you want the plain starting point, it is our Unscented Whipped Tallow, which is grass-fed tallow whipped with organic coconut oil and nothing else. On a face, fewer variables is usually the right call.
What tallow actually is
Tallow is rendered beef fat, traditionally from the fat around the kidneys, known as suet. Melt it gently, separate out everything that is not fat, filter it, and you are left with a firm white fat that is close to odourless when it is filtered properly. Whip that with a little organic coconut oil and it becomes soft enough to use with a fingertip.
Our tallow comes from grass-fed, grass-finished cattle raised on 150-plus acres of regeneratively farmed land, with no herbicides, pesticides or vaccines, and we render it in small batches ourselves. That matters for composition, which we get to below, and we go into it properly in grass-fed vs. grain-fed tallow.
Why a fat suits facial skin
Your skin barrier is substantially made of lipids. The outermost layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum, is a structure of cells packed in a lipid matrix, as the StatPearls chapter on skin anatomy describes. A fat sitting on top of that is working with the grain of the material rather than against it.
Mechanically, tallow behaves as an occlusive. The StatPearls review of moisturizers puts the category plainly: occlusive moisturizers prevent water evaporation or reduce transepidermal water loss from the skin by forming a barrier. That is the whole mechanism, and it is not a mysterious one. Grass-fed tallow also carries the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, and more conjugated linoleic acid than grain-fed tallow, because fat composition follows diet.
What we are describing there is what the material is, not a promise about your face. The honest claim is that an occlusive fat helps skin hold moisture, and skin that is holding moisture looks and feels better. That is the claim, and we are going to stop there.
The fragrance-free jar is the one we would put on a face
Unscented Whipped Tallow is two ingredients and no scent at all, which is what you want on the part of you that shows. Whipped by hand in Loomis, California.
What we will not tell you
This is the part most tallow pages leave out, so we will be direct about it.
- That it will not clog your pores. We have not had our jars tested for comedogenicity, so we do not describe them as non-comedogenic and we are not going to put a number on it. A thin layer of a well-filtered fat absorbs cleanly for a lot of skin. Yours is the only sample that counts, which is what a patch test is for.
- That it treats a skin condition. If you are managing eczema, rosacea or psoriasis, that is a conversation for your own provider. We make a cosmetic moisturizer, and we are not going to dress it up as anything else.
- That it is safe for a baby. Ask your pediatrician before you put anything new on a child. We are a small balm maker and not your child's doctor.
- That it fixes pigmentation, fine lines or dark circles. It is a fat. It holds moisture in. Anything beyond that and we would be making it up.
Who tends to get on with it, and who does not
Likely a good fit: skin that feels tight after washing, flakes in winter, or sits dry no matter what lotion goes on it. People who want a short ingredient list. Anyone who reacts to synthetic fragrance and wants a jar with no scent in it at all.
Likely a poor fit: skin that runs genuinely oily, or that breaks out easily. A rich balm is a lot to ask of an oily face, and we would rather say so than sell you a jar you resent. If that is you and you still want to try, use a rice-grain amount at night only, on a small area first. Our Pure Glow Face Serum is a blend of eight organic plant oils with no tallow in it at all, and it goes on far lighter than a balm. For some faces that is simply the better format.

How to try it on your face without wasting the jar
- Patch test first. A small amount on your inner forearm or behind the jaw, left alone for a day.
- Use a rice-grain amount. Not a pea. A face needs very little, and too much is the single most common reason people decide they dislike it.
- Warm it between your fingertips. Ten seconds turns a soft solid into an oil, and an oil spreads thin rather than sitting in a lump.
- Apply to slightly damp skin. Straight after washing, while there is still a little water on the surface for the fat to hold in.
- Press, do not rub. Pressing works it in. Rubbing moves it sideways.
- Night only, for two weeks, before you judge it. If your face looks shiny the next morning, you used too much.

Common questions
Will it make my face smell like beef? Properly filtered tallow is close to odourless, and the unscented jar has nothing added. We answered this one at length in does tallow skincare smell like beef.
Morning or night? Night, for most people, because it is heavy enough to be noticeable under makeup. If you want it in the morning, use half as much. There is more in can you wear tallow balm under makeup.
Can I use it around my eyes? Carefully, off the lash line, and with the unscented jar rather than a scented one. See can you use tallow balm around your eyes.
Scented or unscented for a face? Unscented, as a default. Essential oils are lovely and we use them in our other jars, but a face is where you want the fewest variables. Scented or unscented walks through it.
