If you care what is in your skincare, the ingredient list is only half the question. The other half is where those ingredients came from before anyone wrote a label. That is a fair thing to care about, and it is most of why we render our own tallow instead of buying it in.
What follows is what we actually know about our own sourcing, stated plainly, plus the claims we are not willing to make. Our Unscented Whipped Tallow is the product this page is really about: grass-fed tallow and organic coconut oil, and nothing else.
What we know about our own sourcing
Our tallow comes from grass-fed, grass-finished cattle raised on 150-plus acres of regeneratively farmed land, with no herbicides, pesticides or vaccines, and we render it in small batches ourselves.
That sentence is the whole of what we can tell you, and it is deliberately the same sentence everywhere we say it. Rendering in-house is the part that matters most, because it means there is no step between the animal and the jar that we are taking somebody else's word for.
What we are not going to tell you
This page used to say considerably more, and the extra was not true, or at least was not ours to assert. Removing it is the point of this rewrite.
Three claims about what our cattle are never given. This page carried three specific ones, covering veterinary drugs, growth promoters and the type of feed. We have not verified any of the three, so all three are gone. What we have verified is the sentence above: grass-fed and grass-finished, regeneratively farmed, no herbicides, pesticides or vaccines. If the other three ever become things we can stand behind, we will say so here and not before.
That we are certified anything. We are not going to point at a certification we do not hold. Small and transparent is not the same as audited, and we would rather you know the difference.
A number for how much of anything your skin absorbs. This page carried a specific percentage attributed to a journal with no link behind it. We could not stand it up, so it is cut. Dermal absorption is real and it is also genuinely complicated, and a single headline figure is how you can tell a page has not done the work.
That our tallow is residue-free and conventional tallow is not. We have not tested either one. We can tell you how our animals are raised. We cannot hand you a lab result, and the previous version of this page implied we could.
That plant oils are the problem. The old version of this page argued that plant-derived ingredients carry pesticide residues, which was a strange thing for us to publish given that our own Pure Glow Face Serum is eight organic plant oils and contains no tallow at all. Good plant oils are good. We sell some.
A short ingredient list is the honest version of this argument. Two ingredients in the unscented jar. Scented adds third-party-tested essential oils, never fragrance oil. That is all of it.
The argument that does hold up
Strip out the overreach and something straightforward is left: the fewer things in a jar, the fewer things you have to trust somebody about.
Our unscented jar has two ingredients. We can tell you where both come from in one sentence each. That is not a claim about what it does to your skin, and it is not a claim that everything else on the shelf is contaminated. It is just a smaller surface area for anyone to be wrong about, including us.
That is also why the scented jars use essential oils rather than fragrance oil. Fragrance is a category that can legally hide a long list behind one word. An essential oil is one named thing.
What a short list does not mean
Two ingredients does not mean the jar suits everyone. Tallow is a rich fat and some people do not want that on their face. It is beef fat, so it is not vegan. The unscented version has a faint natural smell that most noses stop registering within a minute.
And a short list says nothing about whether a product helps with a skin condition. It does not. If you are managing one, that is a conversation for your healthcare provider rather than for a page like this one.
No review slot here, on purpose
We would normally put a real customer review beside this section. We have nine reviews on the entire store and not one of them is about sourcing, how the product is made, or what the cattle eat. Rather than stretch a review about scent into a review about farming, we are leaving this space empty and telling you why.
Common questions
Are your cattle organic?
We do not describe them that way. The coconut oil we whip in is organic. The tallow is grass-fed and grass-finished from regeneratively farmed land, which is a different thing from a certification, and we are not going to blur the two.
Do you test for pesticide residues in your tallow?
No. We can tell you how the animals are raised and that nothing is sprayed on their pasture. We cannot show you a residue panel, and you should be suspicious of anyone in our size bracket who claims they can without showing it.
Why does this page say less than it used to?
Because the earlier version made three claims about our own animals that we had not verified, and attributed an absorption statistic to a journal without linking it. We cut what we could not stand behind. The shorter page is the accurate one.
Is it okay to use on a baby?
Ask your pediatrician first. We are a small balm maker and not your child's doctor, so we will not tell you a product is safe for your baby. What we can tell you is what is in the unscented jar: grass-fed tallow and organic coconut oil, no fragrance, no dyes, nothing else.
Where to start
Sensitive skin or no interest in scent: Unscented. Want a scent: the whipped tallow collection shows what is in the current batch, and the seasonal scents come and go through the year.
If sourcing is what brought you here, the longer version is in where to find natural tallow skincare made from grass-fed beef, and the diet question specifically is in grass-fed vs grain-fed tallow.
Rendered in small batches in Loomis, by the two people whose name is on it. If a jar is not right for you, write to us and we will make it right.
